CASINOS

Place your bets...
but there's fun for the whole family

Cape Town has one of the finest casino resorts in South Africa. GrandWest Casino and Entertainment World was completed in December 2000 at a cost of over R1,5-billion. It offers attractions for the entire family.

The casino harks back to the grand old days of the "Tavern of the Seas". Gilded figureheads adorn the casino's walls and the casino floor evokes the graciousness of being aboard an ocean-bound liner. Even the croupiers' uniforms echo this grand, maritime theme. The casino has 1 750 slot machines, which all use smart-card technology. Denominations range from 25c to R100. Sixty-six gaming tables are also available for Diamond Rush, Black Jack, Poker, Punto Banco and American Roulette.

GrandWest draws its theme from the architectural heritage of old Cape Town. Many of the stately buildings which used to line Adderley Street have been painstakingly recreated, some of them on a 1:1 scale. Among the buildings brought back to life are the Opera House, Alhambra Theatre and Grand Hotel. All in all, more than a kilometre of old Cape Town has been recreated.

Starz Cinemas, a 6-screen complex, overlooks the fast food court (home to SA's most popular restaurant chains) which is adjacent to the "Ice Station", the new home of ice skating in the Western Cape.

For the first time, Cape Town boasts an Olympic-size ice rink, as well as a mini-rink, which gives young children a safe environment in which to learn the sport. Skates are available to hire and up to 1 500 people can be accommodated on the ice at any one time.

The children's amusement park is housed in a recreation of the 1652 Fort of Good Hope, which was the first building to be erected at the Cape by Jan van Riebeeck. There is a wide variety of entertainment, including puppet shows, go-karts, adventure golf, and Barbie and Nintendo World.
