Two teams of actors compete against one another in a series of improvised games, judged by members of the audience. Result: hilarious, original, audience-friendly theatre. Theatresports is completely improvised - absolutely everything is made up on the spot by our professional actors. However there is a structure in the form of a competition with games to contain the show and make it satisfying to watch. Before a show starts, the MC for the evening will find audience members that wish to be judges. They are given brighly coloured score-cards that they must hold up to rate each scene once it’s played out. When the show begins, the MC explains how the show will run. The actors then come onto stage and are given team names by the audience. After a warm-up game, the actors dive into the competition, randomly picking games from a box. Each game has a certain set of rules, these are explained to the actors and the audience. Before each game begins, the actors ask for suggestions from the audience. This is where the audience can get involved (note that audience members are never invited onto stage nor forced to participate). Audience members are encouraged to shout out interesting ideas for locations, styles, objects, occupations and many other “ask-fors”. Once the actors have collected a suggestion or two, they’ll use this to start the scene. Where it goes from after that is anyone’s guess, but the result is always fun, magical and often incredibly funny. At the end of the competition, the winning team is applauded (often the scoring goes all haywire, and the first-timers realise that we’re in it to have fun, not to win) and the actors join together to play a final game. Theatresports is incredibly fun for both the actors and the audience members. It is improvisation for entertainment and enjoyment - and what we aim for is to satisyfing our audience and make them feel good. Theatresports virgins: do not be afraid. You will love it. See you soon at one of our regular shows.
