Food Gardens Foundation is a non-profit, educational organisation. It teaches people to grow food for their families and their communities easily and quickly at very little cost, in very little space and using very little water. It teaches people how to use all available resources to grow food, thereby improving their health and quality of life. The methods used are organic - entirely environment friendly.
FGF was established in 1977 as a socio-economic project to teach people to help themselves by growing essential food according to sustainable organic principles at a period of severe drought and hunger in South Africa. The organisation operates on a national basis and its vision is to empower people to overcome malnutrition, famine and hunger. Community development and social upliftment are achieved throught the teaching of specific Food GArdening practices and this results in an improvement in the health and quality of life.
The Foundation runs training courses, demonstration, lectures and produces work papers and newsletters that deal with sustainable organic food production, soil fertility, pest control, household food security, nutrition and healthcare, recycling and other environmental issues. Core training activities are aimed at the education and training of trainers (teachers, environmental officers, health workers, extension officers, occupational therapists, community workers, NGO and CBO staff, church volunteers, and individual householders).
The services offered include:
A yearly membership that gives access to information and support services, plus a quarterly newsletter and low-cost seed distribution service
