Steenberg Hotel is situated on a historic wine farm and golf estate in the magnificent Constantia Valley just 20kms from the city centre of Cape Town, the exquisitely restored boutique hotel offers a taste of gracious country living as it used to be.
The 5 star graded Steenberg Hotel is situated on the Cape's oldest wine farm, a mere twenty-minute drive from the bustling heart of Cape Town. The thirty-bedroom hotel nestles in the tranquil Constantia Valley, against the slopes of the Steenberg Mountain, offering sweeping views over False Bay. The hotel buildings, dating back to 1682 were painstakingly restored and have been declared a National Monument. Here the legendary elegance and traditions of the 17th century blend harmoniously with the most refined luxuries and conveniences of our modern age.
The first owner of Steenberg was an extraordinary young lady, Catherina Ustings, who arrived in the Cape in 1662 from Lubeck on the Baltic Coast of Germany. She named the farm Swaaneweide – feeding place of Swans – which today is the Steenberg Estate.
Fine wines are available for purchase as well as guided tours and wine tasting amongst the breathtaking scenery. A championship Golf Course awaits the avid golfer on the estate.
The Manor House is the original farmhouse and is the oldest building on the Estate, dating back to 1682. Beautiful antiques and ornaments reflect the elegant style of the 17th and 18th centuries. There are two lounges; one lounge is decorated in the traditional Cape Dutch fashion with fireplace. It has copies of the transfer deed signed by Simon Van der Stel displayed on the wall. The other lounge is situated in the original farm kitchen adjacent to the formal vegetable garden. (The gable of the building is a traditional “convex-concave” design.) The large dining room table reflects the importance of family mealtimes in days gone by. The well-polished original yellowwood floor provides the house with a homely atmosphere.
The name of the Jonkershuis directly translated from Afrikaans is “Young Man’s house”. This was the house which the oldest son moved into after his marriage, out of his mother’s house but still a stones throw away. Each room is individually decorated and provide every modern convenience. The central lounge, with fireplace and comfortable furniture, opens onto a patio. This is an east-facing building and therefore gets the beautiful morning sun. Quality reading material is available throughout the house. Challenge your partner to a game of chess or backgammon; or your house neighbour to a game of bridge.
Accommodation is offered in original Manor House, Jonker's Huis, Barn, Swaaneweide and Spurwing Houses.
Each en-suite room is tastefully furnished with exquisite antiques and all rooms overlook the vineyards, golf course or manicured gardens. Amenities on offer to our patrons include an on-site hairstylist and beauty consultant and a gymnasium. Guests can shed their cares and surrender themselves to the quality of personal service, unique to a small luxury hotel.
