LIFE ORIENTATION MIRRORING

A peer-pressure reversal exercise: – Grades 8 - 12

  1. Divide the group into pairs.

  2. In these pairs one person mirrors the other, (use arm/body movements for this.) at a certain point allow the person taking the lead to relinquish it to the other.

  3. After a few minutes of this, allow half the group to become aware of the movements of the others. Then ask them to take on, or imitate these movements.

  4. Within a few minutes the whole group should be moving in unison, and moving closer together.

  5. The facilitator then asks them to slow their movements down and to gradually do some small movement that is separate from the groups.  Ask each person to gradually move away into a space of their own using this movement.

  6. When they each reach this space they can choose to sit/lie/stand and reflect what has taken place for a minute.

  7. Then ask each person to quickly make eye-contact with everyone in the room.

  8. Reflection and comment on this experience:
Ø How does the mirroring process feel?
Ø How did it feel when you broke away and did your own thing?
Ø What does this process remind you of from your lives? Eg: parties, clubs, family/school functions, etc
