A river runs through it
Stanford, on the bank of the Klein River, must be one of the Western Cape's best kept secrets.

It's a historical town that has retained its architectural integrity (– among the top three towns in the province, in this respect).

But it's a town that has been easy to drive past.  The town's entrance is uninspiring (but much improved by the new Peregrine's Farm Stall which invites you to stop) and, from the road, there are no clues to the river or the architectural heritage beyond.  So don't just stop there, explore a little further.

The range of accommodation combined with Stanford's attractions (tranquility, scenery, river activities, brewery, cheese farm, winery, art gallery, shops of interest and restaurants) and coupled with the central situation of the village, makes it an ideal base for day-visits to other Overberg towns, and an ideal place for a weekend or holiday getaway.

Like similar small towns, it faces the challenge of managing the influx of newcomers and tourists.  City emigrés bring change; language being the least.  (Country towns are being anglicised... even internationalised!)

There is an influx of city expertise and entrepreneurial spirit; some seeking activities in retirement, others a better life outside the city.  The result is a new dynamic making country towns desirable destinations... demonstrated by their property prices!

So... how does one safeguard what makes it attractive now, yet still allow it to flourish?
